01 — Take It Off

When to Remove Your Jewelry

Believe it or not, caring for your ring occasionally means taking it off — especially during the following activities.

🎾

Sports

Holding a tennis racket tightly is particularly hard on a ring with stones going all the way around — especially if you're left-handed. At the gym, lifting weights with it on can be hazardous; you wouldn't want a heavy dumbbell making contact with your stone.

🌿

Gardening

It's possible to chip your stones or knock the settings loose while doing heavy yard work. Leave your jewelry safely inside before heading into the garden.

🧼

Cleaning House

It's a good idea not to wear your ring while doing the dishes — harsh chemical soaps or cleansers can soil the ring. For personalized photo rings, take it off while washing your hands, too.

02 — Daily Care Habits

Small Habits, Lasting Shine

A few everyday habits will protect your jewelry from buildup, damage and loss.

Safekeeping

Keep a Safe, Memorable Place

If you'll be taking your ring off for the activities above, make sure you have a safe — and memorable — place to put it. A dedicated jewelry dish or box means you always know where it is.

Beauty Products

Free From Lotion, Sunscreen & Perfume

These products can gunk up your ring and even etch colored gemstones. It's a good idea to take your jewelry off before you apply product, and put it on last.

Maintenance

Have Your Setting Checked Regularly

Most jewelers recommend you have your setting checked every six months to make sure nothing has become loose. Early checks prevent stone loss.

In the Kitchen

Be Careful While Cooking

Cookie dough, turkey loaf, a piecrust — it's great to mix with your fingers. But these foods can leave a film on your ring and really affect its luster.

03 — Water & Chemicals to Avoid

When Jewelry & Water Don't Mix

Some environments can loosen, discolour or damage your jewelry. Remove it before these situations.

Don't Swim in the Ocean

Cold water may shrink your fingers just enough to loosen the ring from your finger — and if you lose it in the deep blue sea, you won't be seeing it again.

Avoid Pools & Spas

Chlorinated water can react with the metals found in jewelry, causing colour changes and even structural damage. Remove jewelry before entering the pool or spa.

Remove Before Bathing

Remove all jewelry before showering or cleaning. Soap can cause a film to form, making it appear dull and dingy. Preventing this film reduces the need for servicing.

05 — Keep It Clean

How to Clean Your Jewelry at Home

Most jewelers will clean your ring free of charge, so take advantage of this courtesy. If you don't have time to get to the jewelry store, there are a few ways to clean your ring at home.

Method A · Everyday

Gentle Dish Detergent

Great for cleaning lotion buildup from the bottom of the mounting.

  1. Prepare a bowl of warm water with a few drops of gentle dish detergent.
  2. Scrub the top and bottom of the mounting with a soft toothbrush.
  3. Rinse several times in hot water to remove all residue.
  4. Dry on a soft towel, or gently pat dry.
Method B · Extra Shine

Ammonia Solution

For an extra sparkle — use occasionally, not daily.

  1. Dilute ammonia in a small bowl with three times the amount of water.
  2. Soak your ring briefly in the solution.
  3. Brush gently over the top and bottom of the mounting with a soft toothbrush.
  4. Dip the ring into the solution again, then rinse in warm water several times to remove all solution.
  5. Dry on a soft towel or gently pat dry.

Note: If you do this over an open drain, use a strainer! A slipped ring down the drain is easily avoided with a simple sink strainer.
